Identifying Triggers to Anger and Reducing Abuse

This two-hour course will assist participants in identifying their personal triggers and response to anger as related to workplace issues and resident abuse.  The course will  review what is considered abuse, reporting requirements, risk factors and strategies to reduce stress.  Participants will be provided with practical strategies to manage anger and stress in order to reduce the risk of responding to residents in an abusive manner.

Exercise is for everybody and every body – Making fitness a priority

This 2-hour course will provide participants with an understanding of why exercise is important for everyone.  Participants will learn exactly how much exercise is recommended for children, adolescents and adults and those with disabilities.  Research will be reviewed that suggests inferior health and fitness levels among persons with developmental disabilities.  Barriers to getting residents to exercise daily will be reviewed as well as behavioral strategies to motivate residents and staff to exercise.  Fitness equipment will be introduced and local and general resources will be reviewed.  At the end of the course, participants will be able to develop a fitness intervention program to increase the physical activity and fitness levels of persons you support.

Scoliosis

This two hours course will cover anatomy and development of the spine. Scoliosis will be covered in depth, including causes, varying types of curves, complications, prevention and treatment. Methods for caretakers to protect themselves from spinal injury will also be addressed.

First Aid

This three hour course provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to check an ill or injured person, how to care for soft tissue injuries, injuries to muscles, bones and joints, heat and cold related emergencies and sudden illness. Course takers will identify with and relate to the content and environments in which they work. Participants will receive a two year certification.

Adult CPR with AED

12:30pm-3:30pm

This three hour course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until advanced medical help arrives. Participants will learn how to check an ill or injured person, respond to breathing emergencies, provide care for choking emergencies, perform CPR and how to use an AED. Participants will receive a two year certification.
